Position: Police Officer Recruit (Non-Certified)

General Summary:
The City of Lafayette is seeking Police Recruits to join our Police Department, with plans to send them to the police academy in January 2025. Police Recruits will begin working with the Police Department in a training capacity before attending the academy.

The Lafayette Police Department provides professional, ethical, impartial, and community-oriented law enforcement services. The department is dedicated to promoting community safety, reducing crime, alleviating the fear of crime, and protecting life and property.

This position is open to candidates who are not P.O.S.T Certified.

Recruit Officer: $70,990.40
Police Officer Step 1: $77,001.60
Police Officer Step 2: $84,697.60
Police Officer Step 3: $93,163.20
Police Officer Step 4: $102,481.60

Essential Functions:

Learn to patrol the city to enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Serve and protect individuals and property, responding to complaints, crimes, disturbances, accidents, and other related situations.
Observe officers conducting preliminary investigations, collecting evidence, and preparing reports for charging individuals with offenses.
Learn to appear in court to offer testimony and confer with attorneys on legal questions regarding arrests.
Assist in preparing and maintaining reports by recording daily activities and incidents.
Observe officers controlling vehicular traffic, enforcing traffic laws, handling accidents, and establishing roadblocks when necessary.
Learn to interact with the public, providing counseling in peace disturbance situations and assisting community members.
Handle calls for service, respond to emergencies, arrest suspected criminals, and maintain community safety.
Develop the ability to operate a patrol car, make quick decisions, and use defensive physical tactics when necessary.
Learn the lawful use of force and how to respond to crime scenes and major incidents.
Typical Qualifications:

Knowledge: Ability to develop knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and ordinances; law enforcement principles, procedures, practices; first aid and medical procedures; and the city's geography.
Skill: Ability to develop skill in using law enforcement vehicles, firearms, related equipment, and self-defense practices.
Training: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Requires 30 semester hours of college or one year of military service with an honorable discharge, or an equivalent combination approved by the City's Human Resources Department.
Special Requirements:

Must be at least 21 years of age.
Possess a valid Colorado Class R Driver's License.
Obtain a safe driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Willingness to attend and pass the Police Academy and become P.O.S.T. Certified.
Must pass written exam, interviews, and polygraph test. Post-conditional offer tests include psychological exam, medical exam, drug screening, and a thorough background check.
